If you're someone who enjoys taking their journeys beyond the paved roads and onto the trails, then you need an SUV that can keep up with your adventurous lifestyle! The Jeep heritage brand has spent the past eight decades building their reputation for creating vehicles that are equal parts sporty and stylish, and the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee perfectly exemplifies both of those qualities. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a full-sized SUV that comfortably seats up to five passengers, and its trim levels run the gamut from sporty to luxurious, and everything in-between! Down below, we'll be sharing the various capabilities and off-road features of the Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup, so that you can choose the best vehicle for your needs!
What Engines Power the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
For the past several years, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has offered two tried and true engine options. Recently, the lineup has expanded to include the Grand Cherokee 4xe, which features a hybrid powertrain that uses both gas and electric power! For the traditional Grand Cherokee, you'll choose either the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine rated at 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with this engine, the Grand Cherokee comes with standard rear-wheel drive, and 4-wheel drive is an available option. The second engine is a 5.7-liter V8 rated at 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, and comes with standard 4-wheel drive. Lastly, the Grand Cherokee 4xe features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, delivering 375 horsepower, and 470 lb-ft of torque. All three powertrains feature an 8-speed automatic transmission.
What Off-Road Features does the Trailhawk Have?
Throughout the Jeep brand's selection of vehicles, the Trailhawk trim always indicates a model that goes above and beyond in terms of athletic ability! This is certainly true for the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which now offers the Trailhawk trim exclusively as a PHEV with the Grand Cherokee 4xe's hybrid powertrain. The 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk comes with features like all-terrain tires, front tow hooks, and a disconnecting sway bar. This is the SUV you need if you're looking to conquer true off-road terrain, whether it's a desert, a forest, a mountain, or even a stream! When properly equipped, the Trailhawk can ford up to 24 inches of water, and its wiring and rechargeable battery pack are safely waterproof-sealed. The Trailhawk also has a maximum ground clearance of up to 10.9 inches, which helps you glide over obstacles with ease. Plus, there are underbody skid plates for added protection.
What Off-Road Features does the Overland Have?
Aside from the Trailhawk, the other off-road model in the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup is the Overland. This model is available as either a hybrid Grand Cherokee 4xe, a classic Grand Cherokee, or even a three-row Grand Cherokee L! If you opt for a gas-powered SUV, you'll have your pick of either the V6 or the V8 engines. The Overland comes with features like front tow hooks, underbody skid plates, and hill-descent control. When equipped with 4-wheel drive, it also features the Selec-Terrain Traction Management System, which has selectable drive modes to help you excel in many different environments. The Overland also has the Quadra-Lift Air Suspension System, which cushions the drive, especially on uneven surfaces, and also increases your ground clearance for better off-road capability. The Overland pairs these sporty features with luxurious features like leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, and 20-inch wheels.
What are some Capabilities of the Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Now that we've described many of the great features of the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it's time to get into detail about what the Grand Cherokee can actually achieve out on the trails! First of all, the Grand Cherokee has an impressive towing capacity across the board. The Grand Cherokee 4xe has a maximum towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds, while the Grand Cherokee with the standard V6 engine can tow up to 6,200 pounds. The available 5.7-liter V8 really takes the cake, and allows the Grand Cherokee to tow up to 7,200 pounds when properly equipped! As we mentioned above, there are also three different 4X4 systems available. The simplest option is the Quadra-Trac I, followed by the Quadra-Trac II. Lastly, there's the Quadra-Drive II system, which is the most robust, and comes with a limited-slip rear differential.
